COVID-19 was one of the deadliest viruses our world has faced in nearly a century. The spread of the virus not only isolated people but created the perfect storm for domestic violence. The pandemic created additional stress for households through income loss, paying rent and mortgages, and limited socialization. Any tension in a relationship is only fueled further by the inability to separate from each other.

Has Domestic Violence Been Worse Since Covid 19?

Many domestic violence victims were forced to stay home with their abuser due to the lockdown. This left little to no opportunity for victims to reach out for help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline reported a decrease in calls during the early days of the pandemic, which suggests that people were unable to find or make time to call for help. Also, any person suffering from abuse is less likely to make the call privately due to being locked down.

The pandemic created a situation with multiple things to argue about, which in turn created more arguments. Couples felt they needed to be together more to feel secure but were unable to take a break from each other. The lack of separation from each other created a volatile environment leading to domestic violence.

Any problem in a relationship was only further heightened by the pandemic.

What Resources Are Available For Help?

Fortunately, many health care professionals can provide support for domestic violence. Some support tools include:

-Emergency shelters: Many women’s shelters have remained open during the pandemic to provide a safe place for victims of domestic violence.

-Hotlines: The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 to help those in abusive relationships. They can be reached at 1-800-799-7233.

-Online chat services: The National Domestic Violence Hotline also offers an online chat service for those who feel more comfortable communicating in a chat format.

-Virtual support groups: There are a number of online support groups available for victims of domestic violence.

Is Covid 19 Causing Domestic Violence To Increase?

Unfortunately, the answer is yes. But, there are many things you can do to take action. If you are a victim of domestic violence, reach out for help. Many victims of domestic violence feel trapped and believe the situation will improve. However, it’s not usually the case. There are many people who want to support you and can offer resources to keep you safe.
